Where to Start for Jail and Records Questions

The local jail and sheriff contact for Scioto County custody questions is:

Scioto County Sheriff's Office / Correction Center
1025 16th St
Portsmouth, OH 45662
Corrections/Jail: (740) 355-8277
Dispatch: (740) 354-7566
Support Services: (740) 355-8245
Email: scso@sciotocountysheriff.com

The sheriff's public-records policy says records are available for inspection during regular business hours, except holidays, unless an Ohio-law exemption applies. Requests should identify the records clearly enough for the office to locate them, but Ohio public-records practice does not require a written request, a name, or a stated purpose. The sheriff's stated goal is to acknowledge requests in writing, or satisfy them when possible, within three business days after receipt.

For court-filed charges after a jail arrest, use the Scioto County Clerk of Courts and the proper court portal. Common Pleas records start with the clerk's online-records page, and Portsmouth Municipal Court uses its CaseLook search for municipal criminal and traffic matters. Prosecutor questions about felony prosecution are separate from jail records and belong with the Scioto County Prosecutor's Office.
